CHAPTER FOUR
âDonât you ever sleep?â
Perdita looked up. Kit was standing in the doorway, smiling.
âI thought Iâd have an early start.â
âThings didnât go well with Warren last night, then,â he said dumping his bag on a chair before perching on the desk and looking sympathetically at Perdita. It was a statement rather than a question.
âNope, it turns out he and Jacqui are still married. Theyâre not even separated.â
âWhat?â Kit sounded furious. âFor Godâs sake, Perds, youâre engaged. How could he have got that wrong? Itâs quite a major oversight.â
âYouâd think, wouldnât you? Anyway, past tense now, âwereâ engaged,â she held up her ring-free left hand. In an attempt to hide her despair, she forced her voice to take a lighter note. âHe doesnât like you much,â she continued, knowing this would amuse Kit, who grinned, delighted.
âReally?â
âHe said the reason he staged his dramatic entrance was because he wanted to put you in your place.â
âWhat had I done?â
âHeâd seen you take my hand and, even though he hasnât admitted it, he was jealous. He called you: âthat smug Mackensie kidâ.â
Kit burst out laughing. âKid! Doesnât he know Iâm older than you?â
Perdita shook her head. âI didnât bother to enlighten him. I thought Iâd leave him to wallow in his seething envy. I also decided not to tell him that you have a girlfriend.â
Kitâs dancing eyes shadowed slightly. He retrieved his bag before settling in the chair opposite Perdita. âActually, I donât.â
âDonât what?â
âHave a girlfriend. Lydia and I decided to gracefully call it a day when we went to Di and Stephenâs wedding.â
âOh. Why?â
âWe realised weâd grown apart and, while we still cared about each other, it wasnât the same. I think itâs been a long time coming but it was the best decision for us both.â
âYou didnât tell me,â said Perdita, confused as to why this was upsetting her so much. âYou could have confided in me, Iâd have been able to support you like youâve helped me.â
âPerds, there was nothing to tell,â he said, âit didnât seem important.â She turned away from him, strangely delighted by his unexpected announcement. âAre you all right?â he asked.
âYes,â she replied, quashing the rising tide of joy and forcing her emotions back to her wrecked relationship with Warren. âIâm not too bad. Sad and a bit shell-shocked but deep down, Iâve always suspected he wasnât being honest. Our relationship often felt slightly unreal, as though he were playing the part of the perfect boyfriend. I knew there were problems but Iâd had so much unhappiness, I couldnât bear the thought of examining it and maybe destroying it. Foolâs gold was better than no gold for a while. Maybe itâs like you and Lydia, I was hanging on to something because it was there rather than because it was doing me any good.â
Kit seemed about to say something, then changed his mind and instead said: âIs he still here?â
âNo idea. He slept in the guest room and the door was shut when I crept out. I havenât been around the front to check whether his car has gone.
